This is a little gem of a book, it really is!!
If you live in the UK, (and are not an uptight nationalist who thinks we can do no wrong - and there seem to be more of these as time goes by), then you MUST read this book. If you don't live in the UK, read it anyway. At least you can look at the book as 101 valid reasons NOT to visit or come and live here.
'Crap Towns II: The Nation Decides' is the brainchild of the people behind the thoroughly respectable and excellent web-site The Idler - a satirical, 'devil-may-care' place where the disenchanted and alienated go to offload their issues and discuss things of merit and substance.
'Crap Towns: The 50 Worst Places To Live In The UK' is the original book that started it all. It delves into the seemy underbelly of British life and comes up smelling of something rather unpleasant. At times hilarious, at others disturbing, I really can think of no other books that capture the dispare of ravaged Britain in the 21st century.(N.B. It's interesting to read the comments of those people who gave negative reviews on the Amazon site - they so obviously missed the point!!)
From the soul-destroying, drug and crime infested sink estates to the self-satisfied smug and bland leafy suburbs, from the characterless, concrete monstrosities of inner city urban planning to the windswept and bleak coastal retirement dormitories of 'god's waiting room' - it's all here. Britain's social microcosm is reflected here in a snapshot, an atomisation if you will, of what would appear to be the gradual disintegration of a society.
Rating: 10/10
Very flattering... thank you.
Yes, I have been googling my own name, and yes, I know... But that's not going to stop me plugging my new book:
